Fall is upon us, and Police Chief Mike Behan would like to touch base with Fox Lake residents on a few subjects:
- Graffiti: There has been a rash of graffiti painted on benches, sidewalks, posts, brick walls and even homes. Police Chief Mike Behan would like to ask that if anyone sees graffiti on anything within the Village, to please call the Fox Lake Police Department so they can get it documented and removed. Graffiti is a way for gang members and others to try to mark their territory or tag their names. The Police Department does not, and will not, allow gangs to mark territory in Fox Lake. So if you see someone with a spray gun or marker sitting and writing on anything, please call the police immediately. This is defacement of property, and anybody responsible for doing such can be charged with criminal damage.
- Suspicious Persons: You know your neighborhood better than anyone. If you see someone who does not belong there, especially at odd hours, please call the police. It may be nothing, or then it may be someone walking down the street to gather information, such as what time a resident leaves for work, or scoping out his or her next burglary. The Police just need to know there is a suspicious person in your neighborhood and you want the police to check it out. You do not have to provide your name or address.
- Lock you vehicle: It only takes a second to steal the GPS you left on your dash, or the garage door opener that is on your visor. These items give thieves all the information they need to steal from you. Your GPS shows routes and your home address, and a garage door opener will give them easy access to your home while you are away. So please get in the habit of locking your vehicle, even if it is in your driveway. Also, do not leave valuables such as your wallet, keys etc. in an unlocked vehicle.
- Phone Call Access: Do not allow anyone that you do not personally know into your house, even if it is to make a phone call. Tell them you will make the call for them, or that you will call the police to come and assist them. DO NOT LET THEM USE YOUR CELL PHONE. You do not know who they may be calling, and remember, it can be traced back to you.
"These tips are not meant to scare you, but with them in mind and practice, you can help us keep our Fox Lake neighborhoods safe."
